Afghanistan will survive in ICC Men’s T20 World Cup?

By Hammad Ahmed

Afghanistan’s campaign in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup has entered a must-win phase after two consecutive defeats left the side struggling to stay in contention for a Super 8 berth.

Their latest setback came in a dramatic contest against South Africa, where the match stretched into a rare double Super Over. Chasing 23 in the second decider, Afghanistan fell short at 19, conceding a narrow four-run loss in one of the tournament’s most thrilling finishes.

The result compounded earlier troubles and significantly dented Afghanistan’s qualification prospects.

Group standings tighten

Afghanistan are currently third in Group D with a net run rate of –0.555, a figure that could prove decisive in the race for the top two spots.

Both New Zealand and South Africa have won their opening two matches and sit comfortably at the top with four points each. With only four group games per team, the margin for error has effectively disappeared.

Only the top two sides from each group will advance to the Super 8 stage.

What Afghanistan need

To remain in contention, Afghanistan must win their remaining fixtures convincingly against the United Arab Emirates and Canada. Large victories are essential to repair their net run rate deficit.

However, even two wins may not be enough.

Their progression will also depend on other results — particularly slip-ups from New Zealand or South Africa — leaving Afghanistan reliant on a combination of mathematics and fortune as much as performance.

Margin for error gone

With the group stage entering its decisive phase, Afghanistan’s path forward is clear but unforgiving: win big and hope for favourable outcomes elsewhere. Anything less would likely end their campaign early.
