KARACHI, October 7, 2026: The Pakistan Catholic Bishops’ Conference (PCBC) has launched a comprehensive review of the Christian Marriage Act, 1872 to identify legal, constitutional and ecclesiastical reforms.
The initiative is being led through the Catholic Archdiocese of Karachi. The review aims to assess whether the existing legal framework meets the contemporary needs of Pakistan’s Christian community.
According to a statement issued by Archbishop Benny Mario Travas, a special committee has been formed within the Archdiocese of Karachi to conduct the review.
The committee will examine the law from legal, constitutional and ecclesiastical perspectives. It will also consult relevant stakeholders within the Church.
Key Areas Under Review
The committee will focus on several issues related to Christian marriage in Pakistan.
These include religious freedom and the religious and sacramental nature of Christian marriage. The review will also consider the distinct requirements of different Christian denominations.
The committee will examine the ecclesiastical autonomy of the Catholic Church. It will also assess the legal and practical requirements of the present era.
Following the consultation process, the committee will prepare proposals and recommendations. It will also draft proposed amendments where necessary.
The recommendations will then be presented to the Pakistan Catholic Bishops’ Conference for consideration.
Recommendations to Be Shared With Government
After reviewing the proposals, the PCBC plans to present its recommendations to federal and provincial governments.
The conference will also approach other relevant authorities for consideration and deliberation.
The stated aim is to develop a comprehensive legal framework for Christian marriage. The framework would seek to align constitutional requirements with religious freedom and contemporary practical needs.
Archbishop Benny Mario Travas said he was committed to advancing the matter through constructive and meaningful dialogue.
He said the Church would engage with the government, legislative institutions, legal experts and other relevant stakeholders.
The Catholic Church said the review seeks to establish a fair, clear, constitutional and coherent legal framework for Christian marriage in Pakistan.
The framework would also aim to protect the religious freedom of Christians. It would preserve the religious and sacramental character of marriage while addressing the Church’s ecclesiastical requirements.
The Catholic Church reiterated its commitment to consultation and cooperation with relevant stakeholders.
It said any recommendations would be submitted to government institutions through appropriate legal and constitutional procedures.
