Taylor Swift has announced her new single “Patient Zero,” confirming its release after an online countdown sparked widespread speculation among fans about a possible new project.
Swift confirmed on Tuesday that the single will be released on Friday, September 25. The announcement came after her online store displayed a countdown featuring a red curtain and a clock set to reach zero at 2pm Eastern Time.
The countdown quickly prompted fans to examine Swift’s recent social media activity and public appearances for possible clues. Some fans connected the development to an “Encore” theory, while others speculated that Swift could announce a re-recording of her self-titled debut album.
Swift later confirmed the news on social media, writing that she had been “impatiently waiting to tell you” before revealing the release date for “Patient Zero.”
Her online store subsequently underwent a visual change, shifting from its previous sparkly orange design to a dark grey presentation featuring three CD editions of the new single.
Each edition features a different cover depicting Swift dressed in black. The releases also include acoustic and piano versions, giving fans multiple versions of the upcoming track.

During the appearance, Swift said the words, “Saccharide. Aries. From the Vineyard. North or South.” Fans interpreted the unusual sequence as a possible hidden reference to “Encore,” although Swift has not publicly confirmed that interpretation.
