PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi during a meeting about Pakistan cricket team selection

Mohsin Naqvi Orders Pakistan Cricket to Back Young Talent After Senior Players Struggle

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has expressed disappointment with the national team’s senior players and directed selectors to give greater opportunities to young and emerging cricketers.

The Mohsin Naqvi directive comes as the PCB faces growing pressure over Pakistan’s poor results and a series of emergency changes during the team’s England tour.

PCB Reviews Senior Players

Naqvi is reportedly considering further changes as the board assesses the performances of experienced players.

Wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan and opener Imam-ul-Haq have already returned to Pakistan, while head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed and bowling coach Umar Gul have been granted leave.

The PCB has also dropped several other players from the squad as it reassesses the team’s direction.

Naqvi, who became PCB chairman in February 2024, now wants the board to place greater emphasis on Under-19 and junior cricketers.

Greater Backing for Emerging Players

Under the new approach, young players are expected to receive consistent opportunities at international level.

The selection committee has also been instructed to maintain transparency and avoid repeatedly selecting established players who fail to deliver.

The policy could mark a significant change in Pakistan’s selection strategy, with the PCB looking to build a stronger core for the future rather than relying heavily on experienced names.

Pakistan Struggle in England

The changes follow a series of disappointing performances, including Pakistan’s recent Test defeats in England.

Pakistan suffered an innings-and-103-run defeat against England in the first Test at Leeds. The team then lost the second Test at Lord’s by 194 runs.

The results have intensified scrutiny of the national side and increased calls for changes in both selection and team management.

A New Generation in Focus

The PCB’s latest policy signals a potential shift towards developing younger talent and creating a stronger pathway from junior cricket to the international team.

Naqvi is also expected to hold further consultations on possible changes in the coming days.

The board hopes the move will improve Pakistan’s immediate performances while creating a more sustainable pipeline of players for future international campaigns.
