Humanoid robot guides schoolchildren at a robotics school in China

China’s Robot Race Humanoid Machines Move Closer to the Workplace

China’s Robot Race is gaining momentum as the country pushes humanoid machines from demonstrations toward practical workplace roles.

At a robot school in eastern China, a small humanoid named Wuji welcomed schoolchildren and guided them around the facility. The customised Unitree robot described itself as an intern still undergoing training.

Wuji explained that the school offers courses and certifications for robots designed for specific jobs. The initiative reflects China’s growing ambition to develop a workforce of increasingly capable machines.

From Demonstrations to Real Jobs

Unitree humanoids have gained global attention through martial arts demonstrations and robot combat displays. However, commercial use remains limited.

The company itself has warned that large-scale deployment still faces uncertainty. Experts also say robots remain far from independently handling unpredictable situations in the real world.

“Training the ‘brain’ of a robot is a very difficult task,” said Zhu Tianle, an engineer at the robot school.

Technology analyst Lian Jye Su said the challenge involves much more than putting artificial intelligence into a machine. Robots must combine sophisticated software with complex hardware and physical systems.

China Pushes Commercial Use

Beijing has made robotics a priority in its recent five-year plans. China already has a large manufacturing supply chain that supports the industry.

Now, the focus is shifting from making robots walk to making them perform useful tasks at an affordable cost.

The Hangzhou Robot School, operated by Zhejiang University with local government support, aims to help companies develop that capability.

Companies can enrol robots at the school. Trainers then assess each machine and prepare it for a specific workplace role.

The school plans to issue certificates confirming a robot’s ability to perform particular tasks. Officials compare the qualification to a human graduation certificate.

Data Remains a Major Challenge

Humanoid robots are beginning to appear in trial roles across China. These include traffic management, household cleaning and factory work.

However, developers need enormous amounts of real-world data to train machines effectively.

At one training facility, human workers used controllers to demonstrate tasks such as folding clothes, moving blocks and spraying containers. Humanoid robots then copied their movements.

One employee said a usable model could require tens of thousands of hours of training data.

US-China Technology Race

China’s progress has also intensified competition with the United States.

Washington introduced restrictions on foreign humanoid and quadruped robots in July, citing national security concerns. The move added robotics to the broader US-China technology rivalry.

China has advantages in manufacturing scale, supply-chain integration and production costs. Meanwhile, the United States remains stronger in software and advanced research, according to analysts.

Industry experts said the restrictions may have a limited immediate impact because most Chinese humanoid companies generate only a small share of their revenue from the US market.

China currently accounts for more than 90% of the humanoid robot market, according to Counterpoint Research.

The Biggest Test Lies Ahead

Despite rapid investment, analysts warn that the industry faces a major test.

Many robotics companies have attracted high valuations based on expectations that their machines will eventually become general-purpose, human-like workers.

That future remains uncertain.

The next stage of China’s robot race will therefore depend less on impressive demonstrations and more on whether humanoid machines can perform complex tasks reliably, safely and economically.
