TEHRAN: Iranian authorities are preparing nationwide funeral ceremonies following reports that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed during joint US and Israeli strikes amid the escalating regional conflict. Iranian officials have yet to provide independently verifiable evidence confirming the reports.
State officials have described the planned ceremonies as a demonstration of national unity and continued support for the Islamic Republic. Some senior clerics have said they expect large public gatherings to reflect backing for the country’s political system.
The main funeral events are expected to begin in Tehran before extending to the religious cities of Qom and Mashhad. Iranian authorities are also planning commemorative events in the Iraqi holy cities of Najaf and Karbala.
Officials say the government is arranging transportation, accommodation and food for mourners travelling from across the country to attend the ceremonies.
Senior clerics, including Ayatollah Mohammad Saidi, have urged the public to participate in the mourning events, framing them within the Shiite tradition of martyrdom and sacrifice. Public buildings and streets in several cities have reportedly been decorated with black flags and revolutionary banners.
Reports have also suggested that Mojtaba Khamenei, the Supreme Leader’s son, could play a prominent role in Iran’s future leadership. However, Iranian authorities have not officially confirmed any succession arrangements, and reports regarding his condition following the alleged attack remain unverified.
Analysts say public reaction inside Iran appears mixed, with some residents expressing support for the authorities while others remain concerned about the country’s economic challenges, international sanctions and political uncertainty. Security measures have been strengthened across major cities ahead of the planned events.
According to the announced schedule, ceremonies are expected to begin in Tehran before continuing in Qom, Najaf, Karbala and concluding with a planned burial in Mashhad near the shrine of Imam Reza.
Iranian officials have also said representatives from several allied countries are expected to attend the ceremonies, presenting the events as both a religious commemoration and a display of political solidarity during heightened regional tensions.
