Pakistan Steps Up Iran-US Mediation as Field Marshal Asim Munir Holds High-Level Talks in Tehran

ISLAMABAD/TEHRAN: Pakistan intensified its diplomatic efforts to prevent a wider regional conflict as Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Asim Munir met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in Tehran on Saturday for high-level talks aimed at advancing mediation between Iran and the United States.

According to Iranian state media, Field Marshal Munir also held detailed discussions with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. The talks focused on diplomatic initiatives designed to stop further escalation and secure a lasting settlement to the ongoing crisis.

Pakistan’s mediation role has gained international attention in recent weeks. Moreover, Islamabad has continued to engage both Tehran and Washington through backchannel diplomacy.

Rubio Sees Progress in Negotiations

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio acknowledged signs of progress in the negotiations. However, he warned that major differences still remain.

“There’s been some progress. I wouldn’t exaggerate it. I wouldn’t diminish it,” Rubio told reporters after NATO talks in Sweden. He added that more work was still required before reaching any agreement.

Furthermore, Rubio confirmed that Pakistani officials were actively participating in mediation efforts. He expressed hope that the diplomatic engagements in Tehran could help narrow remaining gaps.

Iran Warns Against Renewed Military Action

During meetings in Tehran, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf reportedly told Field Marshal Munir that Iran would not compromise on its national rights.

He also warned that Iran’s armed forces had rebuilt their capabilities during the ceasefire period. According to Iranian media, he cautioned that any renewed US military action would trigger a much stronger response.

Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi blamed Washington for disrupting negotiations. He said repeated policy shifts, military pressure, and excessive demands from the US had complicated the diplomatic process.

Strait of Hormuz Remains Biggest Sticking Point

The future of the Strait of Hormuz remains the most sensitive issue in the negotiations. The strategic waterway handles nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil shipments.

The United States and Gulf countries want the Strait restored to its pre-war status to guarantee uninterrupted global energy supplies. Iran, however, insists on maintaining sovereign control over the route.

Rubio described any Iranian tolling or supervisory mechanism in the Strait as “unacceptable.” As a result, the dispute continues to block a final breakthrough.

Trump Administration Reviews Military Options

At the same time, reports suggest the administration of Donald Trump is reviewing possible military options if diplomacy collapses.

According to CBS News, US officials have continued contingency planning despite ongoing negotiations. Several military and intelligence officials reportedly changed holiday schedules amid fears of renewed conflict.

However, the White House reiterated that diplomacy remains Washington’s preferred path if Iran agrees to conditions preventing nuclear escalation.

Qatar and Türkiye Join Diplomatic Efforts

In addition to Pakistan, both Qatar and Türkiye have increased diplomatic engagement to support negotiations.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan held separate talks with Iranian and Qatari officials regarding the latest developments.

Meanwhile, Qatari negotiators also travelled to Tehran in coordination with US diplomats to help bridge remaining differences.

Pakistan Emerges as Key Mediator

Pakistan’s role has become increasingly central since the temporary ceasefire took effect in April. Earlier, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi visited Tehran twice within days to maintain communication between both sides.

Diplomatic observers believe the current negotiations have entered a decisive phase. They warn that failure could push the region back toward military confrontation and deepen the global energy crisis.

For now, Pakistani mediation efforts continue as regional powers race to secure a durable political settlement.
