Are Electric Vehicles Truly a Climate Solution? DawnNews Examines Hidden Costs of EV Transition

May 4, 2026
0

As electric vehicles (EVs) increasingly take center stage in global climate strategies, questions are emerging about whether they represent a simple and complete solution to the climate crisis. DawnNews explores the broader environmental and economic realities behind the global shift toward EV adoption.

According to economist Ammar Habib Khan, EVs should be viewed as “part of the solution, but not an overall policy intervention,” highlighting that while they reduce tailpipe emissions, they do not fully resolve the complex challenges of sustainable mobility.

Behind the clean and green image of electric vehicles lies a more complicated reality involving the extraction of critical minerals, significant water usage, and broader concerns related to supply chains, environmental sustainability, and economic equity. These hidden costs challenge the perception of EVs as an entirely clean alternative to traditional fuel-based transportation.

The discussion comes at a time when climate change is accelerating globally, placing countries like Pakistan at greater risk despite their relatively low contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions. Pakistan continues to rank among the most climate-vulnerable nations, facing increasing threats from extreme weather, water scarcity, and environmental degradation.

In this context, the need for coordinated and practical climate action has become more urgent than ever. The upcoming Breathe Pakistan International Climate Change Conference 2026, scheduled for May 6 and 7, aims to bring together policymakers, experts, and stakeholders to address these challenges and develop comprehensive, locally grounded climate strategies aligned with global efforts.

The program “Front Seat to Climate Change” further explores the complex realities behind the global EV transition, shedding light on both its opportunities and its environmental trade-offs.
