Karachi: As climate change and environmental degradation intensify, a unique plantation drive in Karachi is making a lasting impact—by combining ecological action with spiritual values. Titled

“ایک درخت حسین کے نام” (A Tree in the Name of Hussain), the campaign is an annual initiative by Who is Hussain – Pakistan, launched in 2020 as a tribute to Imam Hussain ibn Ali (AS), revered for his stand against injustice and commitment to humanity.

Held annually from the 1st to the 8th of Muharram, this year’s campaign marked a major milestone with the distribution of 6,000 saplings across seven key locations: Soldier Bazaar, Jafar Tayyar, New Rizvia Society, IRC, Dow Medical College, Nishtar Park, and Amroha Society. Tree species like Neem, Jamun, Moringa, and Gul Mohar were selected for their resilience and environmental benefits.

According to Syed Kazim Mehdi, Media Coordinator for Who is Hussain – Pakistan, the initiative began as an experiment. “The overwhelming public response in 2020 motivated us to continue growing this campaign every year,” he said. “Each tree we plant is not just environmental action—it’s Sadaqah Jariyah, continuous charity inspired by Imam Hussain’s legacy.”

Beyond this campaign, the Karachi chapter actively runs year-round welfare programs. These include blood donation drives for thalassemia patients, the “Mall of Happiness” for orphaned children, and Ramadan events like “Salon for Stars” for street children. Through its Education Support Program (ESP), the group also assists students from underprivileged communities.

With “A Tree in the Name of Hussain,” Who is Hussain – Pakistan continues to champion environmental stewardship, social service, and values of compassion, justice, and sacrifice—planting not only trees, but also hope and awareness for future generations.
