US Visa Bond State Department Makes Visa Bond Programme Permanent

US Visa Bond requirements will become permanent after the US State Department announced a new rule allowing consular officers to require certain visa applicants to post bonds of up to $20,000 before receiving a visa.

The rule applies to B1 and B2 visas, which cover business and tourism travel. It is scheduled to take effect on August 3 following its publication in the Federal Register.

Higher Bond Amounts Introduced

Under the new policy, consular officers may require eligible applicants to post a bond of up to $20,000, depending on individual circumstances.

Previously, the 2025 pilot programme allowed bonds of $5,000, $10,000 and $15,000. However, the final rule removes the $5,000 option and increases the maximum amount.

According to the State Department, data collected during the pilot programme showed that the visa bond system helped improve compliance among visa holders.

Programme Covers 50 Countries

The permanent programme applies to citizens of 50 countries, with 30 of them located in Africa.

US officials said the policy aims to reduce visa overstays and strengthen compliance with immigration rules.

Critics Raise Concerns

However, immigration advocates argue that the policy could discourage legitimate travellers from visiting the United States.

In addition, rights groups criticised the measure, saying it forms part of broader immigration restrictions introduced during President Donald Trump’s administration.

They argue that tougher visa policies, increased application fees and expanded social media screening have made legal immigration more difficult.

Meanwhile, President Trump has defended the measures, saying they are necessary to strengthen national security and reduce illegal immigration.
