South Africa Police: Senior Officer Survives Assassination Attempt Ahead of Public Inquiry

South Africa Police: One of South Africa’s most senior police officers has survived an apparent assassination attempt after gunmen opened fire on his vehicle in Johannesburg, authorities have confirmed.

Major General Feroz Khan, the deputy head of crime intelligence, was shot on Sunday evening while driving home. Local media reported that he underwent emergency surgery after the attack and is receiving medical treatment.

The shooting occurred just days before Khan was scheduled to appear before the Madlanga Commission, a public inquiry established to investigate allegations of organised crime and corruption within South Africa’s police service.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said investigators are examining the incident but cautioned against linking the attack to Khan’s expected testimony.

“It is premature and irresponsible to speculate on any possible motive or conclude that the shooting is connected to his anticipated appearance before the commission,” she said.

The Madlanga Commission was established after Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi alleged in July last year that organised crime networks had infiltrated sections of the government and law enforcement agencies.

Khan is also facing separate legal proceedings. Last month, authorities arrested him and two other individuals on allegations related to the illegal dealing and unlawful possession of precious metals.

The case stems from a 2021 incident in which a businessman was detained at Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport with 75.9 grams of unwrought gold. The businessman claimed he was participating in an undercover operation involving senior police officials.

However, prosecutors said investigators found no authorised undercover operation involving precious metals at the time. They further alleged that Khan and another senior officer instructed officials to release the businessman.

Khan has not publicly responded to the allegations. He was granted bail after his arrest, and the case remains before the courts.

Police have launched an investigation into Sunday’s shooting, and authorities have not yet identified any suspects or confirmed a motive.
