Russian Strikes Kill Nine in Kyiv as Ukraine War Enters Sixth Day of Attacks

Russian air attacks killed nine people and injured more than a dozen others in Kyiv and the surrounding region on Tuesday, Ukrainian authorities said.

The strikes marked the sixth consecutive day of Russian attacks on the Ukrainian capital.

Emergency services said eight people died in Kyiv. Five others suffered injuries, including three children. The attacks also sparked fires at several locations across the capital.

Strikes hit Kyiv region

In Boryspil, in the Kyiv region, one person died and nine others suffered injuries.

The injured included a child, regional Governor Tymur Tkachenko said.

Missiles and drones damaged an apartment building and a business facility in the area.

The repeated attacks have disrupted daily life for millions of people. Air raid alerts covered much of Ukraine early on Tuesday.

Russia has also stepped up attacks on border areas, energy sites and logistics facilities.

Border crossing with Romania affected

A fresh Russian strike on Tuesday disrupted operations at the Orlivka border crossing with Romania.

The crossing sits on the Danube River. Romania is a member of both the European Union and NATO.

The incident added to concerns over the widening impact of the war on Ukraine’s neighbours.

Drone attacks reported inside Russia

Ukraine also continued attacks inside Russia.

A drone strike caused a fire in the port area of Ust-Luga, a major export hub in northwestern Russia.

Moscow also reported that its forces were intercepting drones.

In Russia’s Samara region, an air attack damaged civilian infrastructure, according to the regional governor.

The area lies about 800km southeast of Moscow and contains several major oil refineries.

Russia and Ukraine deny deliberately targeting civilians.

Reuters could not independently verify the reports of damage or casualties.

Peace efforts continue

The latest strikes came as diplomatic efforts continued to find a way to end the war.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Monday that he held a “detailed and constructive” call with US President Donald Trump’s envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.

Zelenskiy said both sides were working to finalise dates for the envoys’ visit to Ukraine.

He said the visit would focus on advancing peace efforts.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war.

During a call on Monday, Modi said the conflict needed to end for the sake of humanity.

The Kremlin said Putin told Modi that Moscow was continuing to work towards that goal.

NATO members strengthen defences

The war has also pushed several NATO members to strengthen their military preparedness.

Countries bordering Russia have paid particular attention to drone incidents near their territory.

NATO’s Baltic air-policing mission briefly activated fighter jets in Latvia.

Finland also restricted air and maritime traffic near its border with Russia, its armed forces said.

The measures followed reports of drones flying over Russia’s Leningrad region, where Ust-Luga is located.

Estonia also briefly issued an air-threat alert on Tuesday.

Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna thanked NATO for its response. He said the alliance had reacted quickly and according to plan.

The latest developments underline the continuing risks posed by the war beyond Ukraine’s borders, even as diplomatic efforts seek a path towards a ceasefire and lasting peace.
