Karachi: A high-profile delegation from the Russian Rowing Federation, led by Olympic Champion Alexey Svirin, has arrived in Karachi to participate in the 17th Annual International Regatta organized by the Karachi Boat Club. This marks the Russian team’s first visit to Pakistan, accompanied by top athletes from seven Russian universities representing their homeland in the prestigious event.

Key Delegation Members

The Russian delegation includes:

  • Alexey Svirin, President of the Russian Rowing Federation and Olympic Champion (Athens 2004).
  • Andrey Mintsev, Vice President and USSR International-Class Sports Master.
  • Anton Zarutskiy, Vice President and former European Vice-Champion.

The event, which runs until February 2, 2025, will take place in open waters near the Karachi Boat Club.

Strengthening International Sports Ties

This collaboration stems from the efforts of the Russian House in Pakistan and the Rowing Sports Federation, which have worked together to foster sports diplomacy. In 2024, Pakistani athletes participated in two regattas in Moscow (May) and Vladivostok (September) at the invitation of the Russian Rowing Federation, marking a new era of sports friendship between the two nations.

The Russian House in Karachi has expressed its commitment to helping Pakistani sports associations establish partnerships with Russian counterparts.

Press Conference Highlights

The Russian delegation attended a press conference at the Karachi Press Club, where they praised Pakistan’s hospitality and expressed excitement about participating in the Karachi Boat Festival. During the visit, the delegation was given a tour of the Press Club, where they learned about its rich history and operations.

Warm Reception

The team was deeply impressed by the warm welcome and the opportunity to interact with Press Club members. They acknowledged the significance of such cultural exchanges in strengthening ties between the two nations.

Acknowledgments

The Russian House and the Russian Ministry of Sport were commended for their role in fostering international sports relations.

Representatives from the Russian House

  • Ruslan M. Prokhorov, Director of the Russian House in Karachi.
  • Dr. Natalia Fariha Aqib, Assistant Director of the Russian House in Karachi.
