Ready Player Two Screenwriter Zak Penn Confirms Sequel Is Still in Development

Ready Player Two remains in development, with screenwriter Zak Penn confirming that he is actively working on the long-awaited sequel to the 2018 sci-fi blockbuster.

Penn shared the update during the red carpet premiere of Stuart Fails to Save the Universe. When asked about the project’s status, he replied, “I am working on it.”

Sequel Moves Forward

Penn co-wrote Ready Player One with author Ernest Cline, whose bestselling 2011 novel inspired Steven Spielberg’s hit film.

The original movie starred Tye Sheridan as Wade Watts, a teenager who competed for control of the virtual world known as the OASIS after the death of its creator, James Halliday.

By the end of the film, Wade and his friends took shared control of the OASIS and introduced weekly shutdowns to encourage people to spend more time in the real world.

Free Guy Sequel Remains Uncertain

Penn also discussed the possibility of a Free Guy sequel.

However, he said he could not confirm whether the project would move forward.

He explained that director Shawn Levy and actor Ryan Reynolds chose not to rush into another film because they believed the original story worked well on its own.

Interest in the Adaptation Continues

Ernest Cline released the novel Ready Player Two in 2020.

Soon after, he revealed that Warner Bros. had started discussions about adapting the book into a feature film.

Cline also said the project was in its early stages, as he had focused first on completing the novel.

Meanwhile, Steven Spielberg confirmed in 2024 that he plans to produce the sequel instead of directing it.
