Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday honored three Heroes of Gilgit Baltistan for their extraordinary courage and timely action that saved nearly 300 lives during a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) in Ghizer.

The Prime Minister awarded Wasiyat Khan, Ansar, and Muhammad Khan with shields and cash prizes of Rs 2.5 million each, acknowledging their heroism.

“You are heroes of the nation. Your timely action saved three hundred precious lives. The nation is praying for you and will always remember your valour,” the Prime Minister said while meeting the men in Islamabad.

Sharing details of the incident, one of the citizens told the Prime Minister that they endured a long and difficult trek to alert locals about the imminent danger. “We informed the villagers, who were four hours away, about the glacial outburst after gaining access to a phone. Later, we were evacuated by an army helicopter,” he said.

The Prime Minister lauded their spirit of sacrifice and said he would soon visit Gilgit Baltistan to personally honor the people’s bravery. He also hosted the men as official guests in the capital for a night stay.

Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar was also present during the ceremony.
