Nazia Hassan remains an enduring icon of Pakistani pop music.
Nazia Hassan remains one of Pakistan’s most celebrated pop singers as fans mark the 26th anniversary of her death on Thursday.
Born on April 3, 1965, Nazia Hassan began her musical journey at a young age. Her breakthrough came with the song “Aap Jaisa Koi”, which brought her international recognition and established her as a pioneering voice in South Asian pop music.
She later became a household name through Pakistan Television’s popular programme Sung Sung. Her popularity grew rapidly during the 1980s, particularly among young audiences.
Nazia released her debut album, Disco Deewane, in 1981. The album became one of the biggest Asian pop successes of its time and reached audiences in 14 countries. The title track also became a defining youth anthem and cemented her place in the region’s music history.
At just 15 years old, Nazia made history by becoming the first Pakistani singer to win an Indian Filmfare Award in 1980.
Throughout her career, she received numerous national and international honours. Pakistan later recognised her contribution to music with the Pride of Performance, one of the country’s highest civilian awards.

For many Pakistanis who grew up watching PTV during the 1980s, Nazia represented more than a pop star. Her distinctive voice, modern musical style and cultural influence helped shape a new era of Pakistani pop music.
More than two decades after her death, Nazia Hassan’s music continues to resonate with audiences, while her legacy remains an enduring part of Pakistan’s cultural history.
