remains the focal point of the protests

Islamabad: The Pakistani Army deployed in Islamabad on Tuesday after violent protests broke out, killing six security personnel. Protesters demanding Imran Khan’s release broke through barricades and clashed with security forces.

Khan’s Imprisonment Sparks Unrest
Imran Khan, imprisoned for over a year and facing 150 criminal charges, remains the focus of the protests. His supporters argue that the charges are politically motivated. Khan has been incarcerated since his conviction in August 2023 for corruption. He called on his followers to rally for his release, sparking large protests.

Violence Escalates Amid Security Crackdown
Violence erupted when a vehicle rammed into security personnel on the Srinagar Highway, killing four Rangers and injuring others. Another police officer died in a separate attack. Protesters continued to march toward the Red Zone, where government buildings are located, despite security forces’ efforts to stop them.

Interior Minister Warns of Live Fire
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi warned that security forces would fire live ammunition if protesters fired on them. “We’ve authorized police to act based on the situation,” Naqvi said.

Security Forces Respond to Clashes
The army took control of D-Chowk and other key areas to manage the situation. Paramilitary forces fired warning shots to disperse the crowds. Authorities blocked roads, and businesses and schools shut down, adding to the disruption.

Communication Disruptions
As unrest spread, mobile and internet services in Islamabad were cut off. Platforms like WhatsApp experienced outages, making it difficult for protesters to communicate.

Casualties Mount, Media Attacked
The violence led to casualties among both security forces and civilians. Journalists covering the protests faced attacks. A videographer from The Associated Press suffered head injuries after protesters assaulted him and took his camera.

Army Deployed Under Article 245
The Pakistani Army stepped in under Article 245 of the Constitution to assist civil authorities. Security forces received orders to deal with any “miscreants” by using force if necessary. The army maintained a strong presence as tensions continued.

Mass Arrests and Warnings
Authorities arrested over 4,000 PTI supporters since Friday. They warned that anyone violating protest bans would face arrest. Schools and businesses in Islamabad remain closed, and the city appeared deserted.

Possible Curfew as Tensions Rise
The government hinted at imposing a curfew to control the unrest. Information Minister Atta Tarar accused protesters of seeking violence. He claimed Bushra Bibi, Khan’s wife, wanted “bodies falling to the ground.” The situation remains tense as the government prepares for more protests.
