Business Reporter

Islamabad: Jazz is spearheading the development of Pakistan’s first indigenous Large Language Model (LLM) in partnership with the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) and the National Information Technology Board (NITB). This private-sector-led initiative aims to bridge a critical gap in the country’s AI landscape— the lack of AI-ready data in local languages. The project is currently in its foundational phase, focused on data collection, processing, and pre-training, with upcoming phases including fine-tuning, alignment, evaluation, and deployment.

Strategic Partnership for Scalable Impact
The collaboration between Jazz and NUST builds on a longstanding relationship and multiple joint ventures. Jazz brings industry scale, technical know-how, and experience, while NUST contributes research depth and academic excellence. With policy alignment from NITB and oversight from a Joint Strategic Steering Committee, the framework ensures transparency, accountability, and national relevance.

AI for National Interest: A Collaborative Approach
As a member of the Planning Ministry’s AI Task Force, Jazz continues to advocate for inclusive participation from diverse sectors. The company has invited stakeholders from academia, government, and civil society to contribute to the LLM initiative, aligning with its vision to create a project that serves Pakistan’s broader AI and technology interests.

Promoting Ethical and Inclusive AI
In 2024, Jazz established an AI Coalition to strengthen ties between academia and industry. Most recently, in collaboration with UNESCO, Jazz hosted a national workshop titled “AI for Humanity: Ethical and Inclusive AI in Pakistan.” The event brought together voices from across the spectrum to discuss responsible and people-centered AI development.

Paving the Way for a Locally Relevant AI Future
Jazz’s mission is rooted in transforming lives through technology. By leading the creation of Pakistan’s first LLM, the company is setting a technological precedent while ensuring the development is ethical, inclusive, and tailored to local needs. Jazz envisions the initiative evolving into a national platform for AI innovation—one that welcomes all stakeholders ready to contribute to the country’s digital future.
