FIFA World Cup 2026: Extreme Heat Raises Safety Concerns Ahead of France vs Paraguay Match

NEW YORK: An intense heatwave across the eastern and central United States has raised concerns over player and spectator safety at the FIFA World Cup 2026, with meteorologists warning that this weekend’s knockout match between France and Paraguay could become the hottest game of the tournament.

Forecasters expect temperatures to exceed 100°F (37.8°C) during the July 5 fixture, while the heat index is forecast to reach between 110°F and 115°F (43.3°C to 46.1°C). The conditions could significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses for players, match officials and thousands of fans attending the open-air stadium.

Under FIFA’s current regulations, officials may postpone a match only if the wet-bulb globe temperature—a measure that combines heat, humidity, wind and solar radiation—reaches 89.6°F (32°C).

Earlier in the tournament, France’s players used pitch-side sprinklers to cool themselves during a match against Sweden that was played in temperatures of around 90°F (32°C).

FIFA rules require cooling breaks during each half when temperatures reach specified thresholds. However, several players and medical experts have called for longer or additional breaks during periods of extreme heat.

Health experts have also warned that spectators face an increased risk of dehydration, particularly those consuming alcohol while spending extended periods outdoors.

Tournament organisers and host cities said they will provide shaded areas, hydration stations and cooling zones at stadiums and FIFA Fan Festival sites to help protect supporters as high temperatures continue across much of the United States.

The heatwave has intensified debate over player welfare and spectator safety as climate experts warn that extreme weather events are becoming more frequent during major international sporting competitions.
