Electricity Tariff Increase Proposed by CPPA Sparks Concern in Pakistan

NEPRA Reviews Electricity Tariff Increase Proposal

Inflation-hit consumers in Pakistan may face another rise in electricity tariff as authorities consider a new adjustment request. The proposed increase of 82 paisas per unit has been submitted under the monthly Fuel Price Adjustment mechanism. Moreover, the development has raised concerns among households already struggling with high utility costs.

The electricity tariff proposal has been sent to the regulator for approval. As a result, the final decision will depend on an upcoming hearing scheduled later this month. This move could further impact monthly electricity bills nationwide if approved.

NEPRA Electricity Tariff Hearing

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has scheduled a hearing on June 30 to review the request. Officials will examine fuel cost data and generation expenses before making a final decision.

The electricity tariff adjustment is based on fuel costs recorded during May. In addition, NEPRA will evaluate whether the proposed calculations meet regulatory standards before approving any increase.

CPPA Electricity Tariff Proposal

The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has submitted the formal petition for the adjustment. According to the submission, the average fuel cost of electricity generation stood at Rs9.25 per unit in May.

This data forms the basis of the requested increase under the monthly adjustment mechanism. Furthermore, officials claim the revision reflects actual generation costs.

Electricity Tariff Impact on Consumers

If approved, the electricity tariff increase could place an additional burden of around Rs12 billion on consumers. Domestic and commercial users would be directly affected through higher monthly bills.

As a result, households already facing inflationary pressure may experience further financial strain. The adjustment adds to ongoing concerns about affordability and energy costs.

Rising Electricity Tariff Pressure

The electricity tariff hike comes at a time when Pakistan continues to face inflationary challenges. Consumers are already managing high costs across essential utilities and daily expenses.

Moreover, officials confirmed that NEPRA will carefully review all supporting data before issuing a final verdict. The outcome of the hearing will determine whether the proposed increase is implemented or rejected.
