Eloy Room celebrates after helping Curacao secure a historic World Cup draw against Ecuador.
Goalkeeper Eloy Room delivers a record-breaking performance as Curacao secure a memorable result in Group E
World Cup newcomers Curacao earned the first point in their history after holding Ecuador to a goalless draw in Group E, producing one of the biggest surprises of the tournament so far.
Just six days after a heavy defeat to Germany in their tournament debut, the Caribbean nation responded with a disciplined defensive display that kept its hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive.
The star of the match was Eloy Room, who made 15 saves during the 90 minutes. The performance set a new record for saves in a regulation-time World Cup match.
Curacao, the smallest nation ever to qualify for the World Cup, relied heavily on their experienced goalkeeper as Ecuador dominated possession and created chance after chance.
Ecuador entered the match on a 19-game unbeaten run and were widely expected to secure victory. Instead, they struggled to find a way past Room despite registering 26 shots.
The South Americans came close on several occasions. Late in the match, Angelo Preciado struck the crossbar with a powerful long-range effort, but Curacao survived the pressure.
When the final whistle sounded, Curacao’s players rushed to celebrate with Room, whose display secured a historic result for the island nation of around 156,000 people.
The draw confirmed Germany as Group E winners and left Ecuador with only one point from their opening two matches. The result increases pressure on Ecuador ahead of their final group-stage fixture.
Curacao’s performance also challenged concerns that the expanded 48-team World Cup would produce only one-sided contests. Instead, the tournament has already delivered several competitive matches involving emerging football nations.
The result will be remembered as one of the greatest achievements in Curacao’s sporting history and a landmark moment for football on the island.
