Stephen Eustaquio celebrates after scoring the winning goal against South Africa
Canada vs South Africa: Canada booked their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 after defeating South Africa 1-0 in a tightly contested Round of 32 match in Los Angeles.
Stephen Eustaquio scored the decisive goal late in the game, collecting the ball on the edge of the penalty area before firing a powerful shot beyond South Africa goalkeeper Ronwen Williams to seal Canada’s victory.
The win sends Canada into the Round of 16, where they will face either Morocco or the Netherlands in Houston on 4 July for a place in the quarter-finals.
South Africa largely focused on forcing extra time and possibly a penalty shootout but failed to convert several late opportunities as Canada held firm to secure the result.
Speaking after the match, Canada head coach Jesse Marsch praised his players’ commitment and resilience.
“It’s about the two years we’ve been together. Think about how we talked about sticking to the plan and showing your character. You guys are Canadian heroes,” Marsch told his team after the final whistle.
The first half offered few clear-cut chances as both teams competed in their first-ever World Cup knockout match.
Canada came closest to breaking the deadlock before half-time when a corner created chaos inside the South African penalty area. Moise Bombito’s header was cleared off the goal line by Aubrey Modiba before Tajon Buchanan’s follow-up effort struck goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.
Moments later, Richie Laryea went down inside the penalty area, prompting strong appeals for a penalty. However, after a VAR review, officials upheld the on-field decision, drawing loud boos from Canadian supporters.
Marsch continued protesting as the teams headed to the dressing rooms, while Bombito appeared to encourage his coach to step away from the referee.
