KARACHI: In a significant recognition of her efforts, the First Lady of Pakistan, Aseefa Bhutto Zardari, was awarded the Soft Diplomacy Award by the UAE Consulate in Karachi during a ceremony commemorating Pakistan’s Independence Day. The award honors her tireless commitment to eradicating polio in Pakistan and her successful lobbying for UAE government support in polio vaccination drives in Balochistan.

Aseefa Bhutto Zardari was accompanied by Faryal Talpur, President of the Pakistan Peoples Party Women’s Wing, who was also recognized for her role in strengthening relations between Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates.

The UAE Consulate’s Soft Diplomacy program celebrates individuals who have significantly enhanced diplomatic and humanitarian ties between Pakistan and the UAE. Aseefa Bhutto Zardari’s advocacy has been crucial in securing UAE assistance to address one of Pakistan’s most pressing public health challenges—the fight against polio.

In her acceptance speech, Aseefa Bhutto Zardari expressed deep gratitude for the recognition and reiterated her unwavering commitment to polio eradication. She emphasized the importance of international cooperation in health initiatives and praised the UAE government for its steadfast support, particularly in the vulnerable regions of Balochistan.

“The fight against polio is a battle every Pakistani should join to secure a brighter future for our children,” she stated. “It pains me that we are one of the last two countries still struggling with this menace. I am committed to this fight and a polio-free Pakistan. I must acknowledge the UAE’s unwavering support in this mission.”

Aseefa Bhutto Zardari also highlighted the enduring ties between Pakistan and the UAE, noting the UAE’s consistent support during various crises. “Pakistan has been fortunate to count the UAE as a close friend. Whether in our fight against polio, during devastating earthquakes, or in the face of catastrophic floods, the UAE has always stood by us, reminding us that we are not alone,” she remarked.

She further expressed her connection to the UAE, saying, “As the UAE has grown stronger under dynamic leadership, so has our friendship. For me, Dubai is a second home. I cherish the years spent there and always look forward to my visits.”

Aseefa Bhutto Zardari’s efforts have not only helped reduce polio cases in Pakistan but have also strengthened the diplomatic bond between Pakistan and the UAE. Her work exemplifies how diplomacy and health initiatives can collaborate to achieve shared goals.

The event at the UAE Consulate Karachi was attended by distinguished guests, diplomats, and representatives from various sectors committed to enhancing Pakistan-UAE relations. Following the award ceremony, Aseefa Bhutto Zardari and Faryal Talpur participated in a plantation drive under the Green Pakistan Initiative.
