Karachi, Pakistan – U.S. Support for Malnourished Children

The United States has delivered 486 metric tons of Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) to UNICEF to assist Pakistani children suffering from severe malnutrition. Specifically, this donation will support over 29,000 children in the flood-affected regions of Sindh and Baluchistan. Consequently, this aid will significantly impact those most in need.

Ambassador Blome Highlights U.S. Commitment

In a ceremony held in Karachi, U.S. Ambassador to Pakistan Donald Blome emphasized the significance of this aid. He stated, “Today’s handover demonstrates the United States’ ongoing commitment to the Pakistani people, especially women and children. Moreover, we must act quickly to address this crisis and protect the future of these children.” Furthermore, he praised the efforts of healthcare workers, including those focused on women’s and maternal health.

RUTF: A Vital Resource for Treating Malnutrition

RUTF, which is a nutrient-rich paste composed of peanuts, sugar, milk powder, oil, vitamins, and minerals, is crucial for treating severe malnutrition. Consequently, this donation underscores the U.S. government’s dedication to addressing malnutrition and its long-term effects. As a result, thousands of children will receive essential nutrition.

Ongoing U.S. Aid and Efforts

Since 2022, the United States has provided nearly $100 million in aid to Pakistan to combat malnutrition. In particular, almost $15 million of this amount has been allocated specifically for treating severely malnourished children. Additionally, the aid aims to improve food security, access to clean water, and healthcare services. Consequently, these efforts contribute to sustainable development in Pakistan.

Key Figures and Collaborative Efforts

The event was attended by notable figures, including Chief Minister of Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah, Sindh Minister for Health and Population Dr. Azra Fazal Pechuho, UNICEF Country Director Mr. Abdullah A. Fadil, and community leaders. Their presence highlighted the collective effort required to address this urgent issue. Therefore, their involvement is crucial for effectively tackling the crisis.
