Australia captain Pat Cummins speaking after his team's 2-1 Test series defeat against South Africa at Newlands.

Pat Cummins Says Australia Must Improve After South Africa Series Defeat

Australia captain Pat Cummins has acknowledged that his team must answer serious questions after suffering two consecutive heavy defeats against South Africa, losing the three-match Test series 2-1 at Newlands on Saturday.

Chasing a target of 288, Australia were dismissed for just 111, handing South Africa a 176-run victory in the third Test. The defeat followed an innings-and-31-run loss in the second match, leaving Australia with two heavy defeats in succession.

South Africa’s series victory also saw them replace Australia at the top of the Test world rankings.

Cummins Accepts Questions Over Australia’s Performance

Speaking to reporters after the defeat, Cummins said criticism of the team’s performances was justified and confirmed that Australia would conduct an internal review.

“We lost two games in a row. I think it’s fair to be asking questions, and we’ll be asking them internally as well,” Cummins said.

He maintained that Australia remained a strong side but acknowledged that improvements were necessary to regain the number-one position.

“We are a very good side, but I think we need to get a little bit better if we want to get back to number one in the world,” he said.

Cummins added that the team could consider changes to its playing approach or personnel as part of the review.

“Maybe that’s a change of style, maybe it’s a change of personnel in some instances. We’ll work it out,” he said.

Decision to Bowl First Comes Under Scrutiny

Cummins’ decision to bowl first after winning the toss on the opening morning attracted attention, particularly because teams had chosen to field first only 11 times in Test matches at Newlands since 1889.

The pitch became increasingly difficult for batting as the match progressed, making Australia’s fourth-innings chase particularly challenging.

South African spinner Simon Harmer played a decisive role, claiming career-best match figures of 10-120.

Cummins said Australia had expected the surface to offer more assistance to the bowlers on the first day than it eventually did.

“We knew it was going to be a high-scoring game. We probably thought it was going to do a little bit more on day one than it did,” he said.

He explained that Australia had hoped to take advantage of the conditions and put South Africa under pressure early in the match.

“You don’t win the toss and think you’re going to bowl the opposition out for 100 or 200, but we thought we could get 10 wickets on day one and that would put us right ahead of the game,” Cummins added.

Poor Decisions Undermine Australia’s Chase

Cummins also pointed to poor decision-making by Australia’s batters, saying the team failed to give itself a realistic opportunity to chase the target.

Although he believed the 288-run target was achievable, Australia lost early wickets and struggled to recover.

“Chasing 280-odd was never going to be easy, but we all turned up today and saw a pretty clear path forward. I thought it was achievable, but we never really gave ourselves a chance,” he said.

He added that Australia’s chances had effectively disappeared during the opening half-hour of the final day’s play.

Australia Turn Attention to New Zealand

Australia will now look to regroup ahead of their next home assignment against New Zealand.

The series defeat has raised questions about the team’s approach, selection and ability to maintain its position among the leading Test sides.

Cummins said the team would assess its shortcomings internally as it looks to improve and challenge for the top spot in the world rankings again.
