Nasdaq 100 Faces $2 Trillion Wipeout as AI Spending Fears Grow

October 31, 2026

More than $2 trillion in market value could be wiped from the technology-heavy Nasdaq 100 in October, as earnings from major technology companies fuel investor concerns about whether massive artificial intelligence investments will generate sufficient returns.

The potential loss would exceed the entire market value of SpaceX. The Nasdaq 100 has fallen more than 5.8% so far this month as investor enthusiasm for AI stocks has weakened.

Major technology companies, including Meta Platforms, Alphabet and Amazon, have raised their spending forecasts as they compete to expand AI infrastructure and secure a larger share of the growing market.

However, the prospect of increasingly expensive investments has unsettled investors, particularly as higher borrowing costs threaten to make debt-funded expansion more costly.

Big Tech Earnings Intensify Market Concerns

Recent earnings reports have produced mixed reactions across the technology sector.

Alphabet recorded its biggest one-day percentage decline on record on Thursday after disappointing performance in its core search advertising business and a sharp increase in cash spending.

Meta also raised concerns after plans emerged for a record $97.5 billion fundraising effort, prompting questions about shareholder dilution and whether growing AI investment could push technology companies to rely more heavily on capital markets.

Microsoft and SpaceX offered a more positive picture, with their results indicating that investments in AI were beginning to generate returns.

John Bilton, global head of strategic research for multi-asset solutions at JPMorgan Asset Management, said investors might have overestimated the pace of growth but added that overall demand remained positive.

“It may be that we’ve overestimated how strong the growth might be, but they’re not going negative in aggregate,” Bilton said.

“We have an insatiable and growing demand for data.”

Apple is scheduled to report its earnings next week, while Nvidia, a key indicator of the AI industry’s performance, is due to release its results in mid-November.

Rising Corporate Debt Adds to Investor Anxiety

The growing cost of AI infrastructure is also increasing pressure on technology companies’ balance sheets.

Microsoft is reportedly planning to raise approximately $25 billion through its first US investment-grade bond sale in more than nine years.

Meta, Amazon and Alphabet have collectively issued hundreds of billions of dollars in bonds over the past four years, raising concerns about the industry’s growing dependence on debt to finance expansion.

Morgan Stanley expects overall capital spending on AI infrastructure to exceed $1 trillion next year.

The rising debt burden has become a concern for investors who fear that companies could face higher financing costs if interest rates remain elevated or returns from AI investments take longer than expected.

Credit Markets Reflect Growing Risk Concerns

The financial risks associated with AI investment are extending beyond the stock market into credit markets.

Investors are increasingly assessing whether technology companies can sustain their borrowing while generating enough revenue from AI-related products and services.

Higher financing costs, combined with slower-than-expected returns, could put pressure on companies that investors previously considered relatively insulated from wider economic challenges.

The shift suggests that market participants are paying closer attention not only to AI revenue growth but also to how companies fund their expansion.

Strong Revenue Growth Offers Some Support

Despite market volatility, revenue across the so-called Magnificent Seven technology companies has remained strong since the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022.

Amazon Web Services, the company’s cloud computing business, continued to accelerate its growth, while Meta reported better-than-expected revenue growth and provided an upbeat outlook.

Microsoft also forecast strong expansion in its cloud business in its latest earnings report.

These results demonstrate continued demand for technology services and AI infrastructure, although investors remain uncertain about how quickly the companies’ heavy investments will translate into sustainable profits.

AI Capital Spending Reaches Record Levels

Major technology companies have historically invested heavily in infrastructure to expand cloud computing, digital advertising and e-commerce operations. However, the AI boom has pushed capital expenditure to unprecedented levels.

J.P. Morgan expects global AI-related capital expenditure to reach $5.5 trillion by 2030, with approximately $900 billion expected to be spent in 2026 alone.

The bank’s analysts also noted that this year’s combined AI spending by Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, Oracle and Microsoft could equal their cumulative expenditure since ChatGPT launched in November 2022.

The scale of investment highlights the growing financial commitment behind the AI industry and the challenge facing technology companies as they seek to turn that spending into long-term returns.

With Apple and Nvidia earnings still ahead, investors are likely to remain focused on revenue growth, capital expenditure, cash flow and borrowing levels as they reassess the value of major technology stocks.
