KARACHI: Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sindh Javed Alam Odho visited Sindh Madressatul Islam University (SMIU) on Thursday, praising the institution’s historic contribution to education and its efforts to provide modern learning opportunities.
SMIU Vice Chancellor Dr Mujeeb Sahrai welcomed the Sindh police chief during his visit, which included tours of the Jinnah Museum, Khan Bahadur Hassanally Effendi Library, TV Studio, Hashmat Lodhi Youth Development Center, IT Tower, Business Incubation Center and Artificial Intelligence (AI) Lab.
Speaking during the visit, Odho said it was an honour to visit the historic institution, where Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah received his education. He added that the visit had personal significance for him because his grandfather and great-grandfather had also studied at SMIU during the 1920s and 1930s, respectively.
The IGP urged students to follow SMIU’s motto, “Enter to Learn, Go Forth to Serve,” and said education should not be limited to building careers and securing family livelihoods.
He encouraged young people to contribute to society and serve the country after completing their education, describing public service as an important responsibility of the younger generation.
While interacting with students at the Hashmat Lodhi Youth Development Center, Odho said students should combine modern education with efforts to improve society.
He also expressed concern over the growing exposure of young people to drug abuse and stressed that parents, teachers and fellow students should work together to guide vulnerable youth towards healthier and more constructive paths.
During his visit to the AI Lab, Odho said SMIU and Sindh Police would collaborate in the field of artificial intelligence. He said the two institutions were expected to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to formalise cooperation.
The Sindh IGP also praised Vice Chancellor Dr Mujeeb Sahrai for his efforts to modernise SMIU and strengthen its academic and technological facilities. He said the university had undergone significant development while maintaining its historic character and could continue improving its educational services.
Dr Mujeeb Sahrai said SMIU was a national heritage institution because of its historic contribution to education and character building. He noted that generations of students had benefited from the university’s 142-year educational legacy.
He said the university was working to preserve its historic identity while simultaneously providing modern education, professional training and contemporary facilities to prepare students for the demands of the present era.
During the tour, university officials briefed the IGP on various departments and facilities. Zonaira Jalali, Manager of the Directorate of Students’ Affairs and Counseling; Dr Mansoor Ahmed Khuhro, Chairperson of the Department of Artificial Intelligence and Mathematical Sciences; Shahid Obaid, Manager of the Business Incubation Center; Mahjabeen Ali, Additional Librarian; Nadia Kiran, Deputy Librarian; Syeda Ayesha Urooj Naqvi, Assistant Librarian; and Tariq Aziz Gorar, Assistant Librarian provided information about their respective areas.
Deputy Director (Staff) Sajid Ali also briefed the visiting IGP on the Jinnah Museum.
