Alibaba's Qwen3.8-Max artificial intelligence model displayed during its official launch announcement.

Qwen3.8-Max Alibaba Unveils Its Largest AI Model Yet

Qwen3.8-Max has been unveiled by Alibaba as the company’s largest and most advanced artificial intelligence model, intensifying competition in China’s rapidly evolving AI industry.

Alibaba said the new model features 2.4 trillion parameters, making it one of the world’s largest AI systems. However, it remains slightly smaller than rival Moonshot AI’s Kimi K3, which has 2.8 trillion parameters.

Competition in China’s AI Sector

Chinese technology companies continue to compete aggressively to build more powerful AI models while keeping operating costs under control.

Unlike many Western AI companies, Chinese developers often release open-weight models. As a result, developers can download, customise and deploy the underlying model for their own applications.

By comparison, companies such as OpenAI, Anthropic and Google do not publicly disclose the parameter counts of their closed-source AI models.

Strong Performance Across Benchmarks

Alibaba introduced Qwen3.8-Max on the crowdsourced evaluation platform Arena.AI.

The model immediately became the highest-ranked Chinese text model on the platform. However, it still trails Anthropic’s Claude Fable 5 and several Opus variants in overall text performance.

Meanwhile, Qwen3.8-Max ranked second globally in image and visual analysis, placing only behind a Claude Fable 5 variant.

Designed for Speed and Efficiency

Both Qwen3.8-Max and Moonshot AI’s Kimi K3 can process text, images and video. They also support context windows of up to one million tokens, allowing them to analyse lengthy documents, large software projects and extensive datasets.

Furthermore, Alibaba said the model uses a mixture-of-experts architecture. This design activates only 95 billion parameters at a time instead of the full model. Therefore, it reduces computing costs and improves response speed.

The company also claimed that Qwen3.8-Max successfully completed a software engineering project in 16 days, demonstrating its advanced coding capabilities.

Release Planned Next Week

Alibaba said it will release Qwen3.8-Max next week through Alibaba Cloud’s Model Studio platform, making the model available to developers and enterprise customers.
