Fresh round of negotiations set in Switzerland as interim ceasefire, nuclear issues, and regional tensions shape talks.
Iran and the United States are set to begin a new round of negotiations in Switzerland on Friday, aimed at finalising a broader agreement following an interim ceasefire framework, according to Iranian officials.
Iran’s Foreign Minister said the discussions are expected to build on an earlier provisional understanding and move toward a more comprehensive settlement. He also warned that any Israeli military action in Lebanon or continued presence on Lebanese territory would violate the interim arrangement linked to the broader diplomatic process.
The negotiations come amid competing claims about a US-Iran understanding. Former US President Donald Trump stated that a preliminary agreement had been signed to help end the conflict involving Iran and Israel, although key details have not been made public and officials have indicated that a permanent ceasefire still requires further negotiation.
According to statements from US officials, the memorandum of understanding is limited in scope and primarily serves as a framework for continued talks over the next 60 days, including sensitive issues related to Iran’s nuclear programme and regional security concerns.
The proposed arrangement reportedly includes discussions on easing sanctions, potential economic support mechanisms, and the phased reopening of strategic maritime routes such as the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global energy corridor.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian described the memorandum as an important step toward de-escalation but confirmed that a final agreement has yet to be reached. US officials have also indicated that sanctions relief and economic incentives would depend on verifiable compliance with future commitments.
The deal has drawn international attention, with several countries welcoming the diplomatic engagement and urging rapid progress toward a lasting settlement. However, key issues remain unresolved, including Iran’s nuclear stockpile, regional militias, and security arrangements in Lebanon.
Oil markets reacted to the developments with prices declining to their lowest level in months amid expectations of improved stability in the region and potential reopening of key shipping routes.
