Welsh music icon Bonnie Tyler has reportedly been placed in an induced coma following emergency intestinal surgery in Portugal, according to a report by the BBC.
A spokesperson for the 74-year-old singer confirmed that doctors decided to place Tyler in an induced coma to support her recovery after the operation.
The spokesperson said fans around the world had been sending messages of support and requested privacy for the singer during what was described as a difficult time. Her management team is expected to release further updates on her condition later.
Earlier this week, a statement shared on Tyler’s official Instagram account revealed that she had undergone emergency intestinal surgery at a hospital in Faro, southern Portugal, where the singer owns a home.
“The surgery went well and she is now recuperating,” the statement said.
Tyler, born Gaynor Hopkins, rose to international fame in the 1970s and became one of the most recognizable voices in pop and rock music history.
She is best known for her 1983 global hit Total Eclipse of the Heart, which topped music charts in both the United Kingdom and the United States.
Her successful career also includes major hits such as Lost in France, It’s a Heartache, and Holding Out for a Hero, the latter famously featured in the hit movie Footloose.
In 2013, Tyler represented the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 with her song Believe in Me, finishing in 19th place.
The veteran singer was also honoured by Queen Elizabeth II in 2022 for her contributions to music over a career spanning more than five decades.
Tyler is currently scheduled to begin a European tour later this year celebrating 50 years since the release of “Lost in France,” the breakthrough hit that launched her legendary career.
