Sindh Cabinet Approves Rs515 Million Fuel Subsidy Package for Fishermen Community

Karachi: A meeting of the Sindh Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah at the Chief Minister House, has approved a major relief package for the province’s fishing community, providing fuel subsidies worth Rs515 million to support thousands of families dependent on the sector.

The chief minister said the government is committed to providing immediate financial relief to fishermen affected by rising fuel costs, which have significantly reduced fishing activity. According to cabinet briefings, an increase in diesel prices has led to an estimated 20% decline in fish catch, directly impacting livelihoods across coastal districts.

Under the approved scheme, fishermen in Karachi, Thatta, Sujawal, and Badin will benefit from the subsidy package. A total of 9,634 registered boats will be supported under the initiative.

The cabinet approved Rs466.2 million for 2,331 small coastal boats equipped with 20-horsepower engines, with each boat receiving Rs200,000 in subsidy. Additionally, Rs28.8 million was allocated for 488 smaller boats with 10-horsepower engines, with each vessel receiving Rs100,000.

Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah stated that supporting fishermen and protecting thousands of families’ livelihoods remains a top priority of the provincial government. He announced that the subsidy will be provided as a one-time payment covering two months of fuel expenses.

The cabinet also decided to implement a fully digital payment system for transparency and efficiency. Fishermen will be required to complete online registration through the Director General (DG) Marine or the Karachi Fisheries Harbour Authority.

After verification, payments will be directly transferred to the bank accounts of boat owners. The process will be jointly monitored by a management committee of the Livestock and Fisheries Department to ensure transparency and accountability.

The chief minister emphasized that the government is committed to ensuring a transparent and efficient distribution mechanism so that financial assistance reaches deserving fishermen without delays or irregularities.

Officials said the initiative is expected to provide significant relief to the coastal fishing community and stabilize livelihoods affected by rising operational costs.
