Karachi: The Goethe-Institut Pakistan, in collaboration with TDF’s MagnifiScience Centre, inaugurated the Science Film Festival 2025 on Tuesday, bringing together students, educators, and science enthusiasts for an engaging celebration of creativity, sustainability, and scientific discovery.

This year’s festival revolves around the global theme “Green Jobs”, emphasizing the vital role of professionals and innovators shaping a sustainable future through technology and environmental solutions. The event combines international films with interactive educational activities to promote science literacy and environmental awareness.

The opening ceremony featured addresses by Favad Soomro, CEO of The Dawood Foundation; Maha Jafarey, Head of the Language Department at Goethe-Institut Karachi; and Anja Klos, Consul at the German Consulate General in Karachi.

Speaking at the event, Favad Soomro highlighted the importance of connecting science with real-world challenges:

“The Science Film Festival provides an invaluable platform to make science more approachable, engaging, and relevant for young learners. By linking scientific concepts to global challenges like sustainability and green innovation, we aim to nurture curiosity and empower the next generation to contribute meaningfully to a better future.”

The event featured film screenings, live science demonstrations, and interactive Q&A sessions that captivated participants of all ages. Over 150 students attended the opening, including many from underprivileged backgrounds who seldom experience hands-on scientific learning. Students also showcased their own science projects inspired by the festival’s theme, reflecting weeks of creative preparation.

Since its inception in 2005, the Science Film Festival has grown into the largest event of its kind worldwide, fostering science communication across Southeast Asia, South Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America. The 2025 edition features 123 films from 37 countries, with 29 films selected for screening in Pakistan.

Through this initiative, the Goethe-Institut continues to champion science education, sustainability, and intercultural exchange — making scientific learning accessible, inclusive, and inspiring for all.
