CM Murad, Aleem Khan Review M-6 and M-10 Motorway Projects in Karachi

Karachi: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah on Tuesday said that the Hyderabad–Sukkur Motorway (M-6) and the Karachi Northern Bypass–Jamshoro Motorway (M-10) are “vital not only for Sindh but for the entire country’s economy.”

Speaking at a review meeting with Federal Communications Minister Aleem Khan at CM House, the chief minister said M-6 would unlock opportunities for interior Sindh youth through improved connectivity, while M-10 would “resolve Karachi’s traffic bottlenecks once and for all.”

Meeting on Infrastructure Projects

The meeting was attended by Provincial Ministers Sharjeel Inam Memon, Syed Nasir Hussain Shah, Haji Ali Hassan Zardari, Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah, Chairman P&D Najam Shah, Secretary to CM Raheem Shaikh, Federal Secretary of Communications Ali Sher, and NHA Chairman Sahibzada Shahryar Sultan.

Officials briefed the CM that M-6, the last missing north–south motorway link, has received final approval under the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP). The project, approved by ECNEC at a cost of Rs 363 billion, will be implemented in five phases by the National Highway Authority (NHA).

The Islamic Development Bank has committed to funding two sections, while a Chinese company has shown interest in executing all five sections. Once complete, M-6 will link Peshawar to Karachi, enhancing trade, logistics, regional development, port-to-upcountry connectivity, and road safety by reducing travel time.

Karachi Northern Bypass–Jamshoro Motorway (M-10)

The M-10 project, originally conceived as a bypass upgrade, has now expanded into a two-segment mega initiative.

  • Segment 1: Upgrading the 34 km Karachi Northern Bypass (ICI Bridge to Hamdard University Chowk) into an 8-lane motorway.
  • Segment 2: Construction of a new 134 km, 6-lane motorway through the Khirthar Range, linking Hamdard University Chowk with the M-6 at Jamshoro.

In addition, a 23 km stretch from Hamdard University Chowk to the M-9 will be upgraded into a 6-lane road, transforming the entire Karachi Port–Jamshoro route into a high-capacity motorway.

Currently, the M-10 is undergoing a feasibility study by NESPAK. Federal Minister Aleem Khan said the project’s primary goal is to decongest Karachi by providing a direct high-speed link between the port and the national motorway network, bypassing city traffic.

Federal Commitment

Aleem Khan assured the chief minister that the Ministry of Communications and NHA were fully committed to completing both projects in a timely and transparent manner.
