Karachi: The Bahria Classification Society (BCS) has officially been authorized as a Recognized Organization (RO) for ship classification and statutory services in Pakistan, following the signing of a landmark agreement with the Ministry of Maritime Affairs.
The signing ceremony took place at the Bahria Foundation Head Office in Karachi and was attended by the Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Mr. Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, who graced the event as Chief Guest.
The agreement was signed by Commodore (Retd) Dr. Muhammad Saeed Khalid SI(M), CEO of BCS, and Ms. Alia Shahid, Director General Ports and Shipping. The ceremony also saw the presence of Vice Admiral (Retd) Imran Ahmed HI(M), Managing Director of Bahria Foundation.
BCS, established as a non-profit organization under Section 42 of the Companies Act 2017, is the first locally-founded classification society in Pakistan. It is now authorized to conduct ship surveys, issue certifications, and perform statutory inspections on behalf of the Government of Pakistan.
The recognition of BCS as an RO is expected to:
- Enhance Pakistan’s maritime technical standards
- Offer affordable and high-quality local classification services
- Support indigenous shipbuilding, ship repair, and offshore industries
- Generate employment opportunities for local professionals
- Boost Pakistan’s maritime economy and international footprint
Vice Admiral (Retd) Imran Ahmed HI(M) expressed gratitude to the Chief Guest and senior maritime officials for their continuous support and participation, highlighting the importance of this milestone in advancing the country’s maritime sector.
