Sindh Madressatul Islam University (SMIU) celebrated its 6th Convocation at a local hotel on Thursday, where 376 graduates received degrees from Governor Sindh Muhammad Kamran Khan Tessori, Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, and Vice Chancellor Dr. Mujeeb Sahrai.

Degrees, Medals Awarded to Outstanding Graduates

Degrees were conferred across various disciplines, while 27 students were awarded medals for academic excellence. These included 3 gold medals, 10 silver, and 14 bronze.

Gold medals went to:

  • Ms. Yusra (Faculty of Management, Business Administration & Commerce)
  • Ms. Sadaf Khalid (Faculty of Social Sciences)
  • Dr. Abdullah Ayub Khan, SMIU’s first PhD graduate from the Department of Computer Science. Dr. Khan has been recognized as one of the world’s emerging young scientists.

Governor Sindh Urges Graduates to Contribute to Nation-Building

Addressing the ceremony, Governor Tessori congratulated the graduates and called on them to dedicate their talents to the development of Pakistan.
“You are graduating from the alma mater of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah—the founder of Pakistan,” he said. “Live up to his legacy and help build the Pakistan that he and Allama Iqbal dreamed of.”

CM Murad Ali Shah Praises SMIU’s Legacy and Growth

Speaking on the occasion, CM Murad Ali Shah highlighted SMIU’s 140-year history and its symbolic connection to the country’s founding leaders. He praised the university for evolving into a modern institution that reflects excellence and public service.

“This is your day,” he told the graduates. “You’ve worked hard, and your success is the success of Sindh.”

The Chief Minister commended Vice Chancellor Dr. Mujeeb Sahrai for taking the university from a financial deficit to a budget surplus, and for streamlining postgraduate and PhD programs.

He especially acknowledged Dr. Abdullah Ayub’s PhD as a milestone and emphasized that all universities—public or private—must uphold the highest standards in awarding doctoral degrees.

New Campus to Open in Education City

The Chief Minister announced that SMIU’s new campus in Malir’s Education City, built on 100 acres, will open soon.
“This will not only enhance access to quality education but also generate employment and uplift the local economy,” he said.

Vice Chancellor Reflects on SMIU’s Transformation

In his welcome address, VC Dr. Mujeeb Sahrai thanked the dignitaries, faculty, and families. He credited the Sindh Government, especially CM Murad Ali Shah, for supporting the university’s academic and infrastructural growth.

Dr. Sahrai noted that since taking charge in 2020, he focused on reforming research culture, updating policies, and improving postgraduate programs. “Today, we’re proud to award our first PhD, and nearly 10 more students are in the final phase of their doctorates,” he said.

Souvenirs Presented to Guests

Souvenirs were presented to Governor Tessori, CM Murad Ali Shah, Chairman Sindh HEC Prof. Dr. Tariq Rafi, CIEC Chairman Dr. Sarosh Hashmat Lodi, and other dignitaries. CM Shah also presented a souvenir to VC Dr. Sahrai in recognition of his leadership.
