Spain vs Argentina will feature a unique coaching battle when Spain manager Luis de la Fuente faces his former student, Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni, in the FIFA World Cup final on Sunday.

Nine years ago, Scaloni joined the Spanish Football Federation’s coaching programme in Las Rozas. At the time, De la Fuente taught the course.

Since then, both men have built outstanding international coaching careers. Scaloni took charge of Argentina in 2018 and transformed the team into one of the world’s strongest football nations.

Under his leadership, Argentina won the Copa America in 2021, lifted the FIFA World Cup in 2022 and claimed another Copa America title in 2024.

Meanwhile, De la Fuente revived Spain’s fortunes after becoming head coach in December 2022. He guided Spain to the UEFA Euro 2024 title and later reached the UEFA Nations League final.

Now, the Spanish coach stands one victory away from delivering Spain’s second FIFA World Cup title after their triumph in 2010.

Scaloni praised his former mentor before Sunday’s final. He said De la Fuente taught him valuable lessons. He also praised Spain’s recent success under his former teacher.

Scaloni also acknowledged his close ties with Spain. He lives in Mallorca with his Spanish wife, Elisa Montero, and their two sons. However, he said his only focus is leading Argentina to victory in the final.

De la Fuente described Scaloni as a dedicated student. Moreover, he said Scaloni always wanted to improve. He added that they still share a strong friendship and mutual respect.

Therefore, Sunday’s World Cup final will not only decide the world champion but also showcase an emotional reunion between a respected mentor and his former pupil.
