The Government of Sindh has approved the establishment of a modern terminal for trucks, trailers, and heavy transport vehicles outside Karachi, aiming to reduce congestion within the city and improve traffic flow.
The decision was announced following a high-level meeting of the Sindh Mass Transit Authority board chaired by Senior Minister for Transport Sharjeel Inam Memon.
According to the plan, the new heavy vehicle terminal will be constructed at the Northern Bypass, with a dedicated freight track linking it directly to Karachi Port. This will allow cargo traffic to bypass the city’s urban road network.
Officials said the initiative is designed to significantly reduce the burden of heavy traffic inside Karachi and improve logistics efficiency.
The board meeting also approved several major public transport initiatives, including:
Officials said each double-decker bus will have a capacity of 126 passengers, helping ease commuter pressure across busy routes.
The government also approved the purchase of 500 additional pink electric scooters for women, as part of a mobility empowerment initiative. Distribution in Hyderabad is scheduled for May 22.
Sharjeel Inam Memon said the scheme has played a transformative role in women’s mobility and empowerment across the province.
The meeting included senior officials from transport, traffic police, and city administration departments. Discussions focused on improving urban transport in Karachi, Hyderabad, and Sukkur through eco-friendly and modern mobility solutions.
Authorities said financial evaluation for several projects will be fast-tracked to ensure timely implementation.
