Ronaldo: Portugal captain hints upcoming season could be his last

Cristiano Ronaldo has hinted that the upcoming year could mark the end of his illustrious football career, saying he wants to leave a “spectacular legacy” when he finally retires.

The 41-year-old Portugal captain has enjoyed a career spanning more than two decades. He has won major trophies with Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus and Al-Nassr after making his senior debut for Sporting in 2002.

Ronaldo, a five-time Ballon d’Or winner, has scored 976 goals for club and country. He is now closing in on the remarkable milestone of 1,000 career goals.

Speaking to lifestyle magazine Vogue in an interview published on Sunday, Ronaldo said: “This is probably my last year of football, and I want to leave a spectacular legacy.”

He also acknowledged that retirement could leave a significant gap in his life after 25 years of professional football. Ronaldo said he would like to travel more, spend time on other interests and continue playing padel.

Meanwhile, Ronaldo will continue with Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr this season as he pursues the 1,000-goal milestone.

The Portugal captain remains one of the most decorated players in football history. However, a World Cup title remains absent from his collection of major honours after Portugal fell short at this year’s tournament.

Ronaldo’s latest comments are likely to intensify speculation over his future as he enters what could be the final season of a remarkable career.
