PTA warns mobile users against sharing SIM cards over legal risks

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has warned mobile phone users not to hand over their SIM cards to anyone else. The regulator said users could face legal action if someone uses a SIM registered in their name for illegal activities.

PTA issues public warning

In a message issued on Friday, the PTA said giving a SIM card to another person is a punishable offence.

Moreover, the authority warned that criminals could misuse SIM cards registered against another person’s identity. Therefore, users should keep their SIM cards in their own possession at all times.

Users should verify registered SIMs

The PTA advised citizens to check the number of SIMs linked to their Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC).

Users can verify their SIMs by visiting cnic.sims.pk or by sending their CNIC number, without dashes, to 668.

In addition, the regulator urged people to block any unknown or unnecessary SIM registered in their name immediately.

Buy SIMs only from authorised outlets

The PTA also advised consumers to purchase new SIM cards only from authorised franchises or official customer service centres.

Furthermore, users should regularly confirm that no SIM has been issued against their identity without their knowledge or consent.

Earlier warning about biometric fraud

Previously, the PTA cautioned citizens against completing biometric verification in exchange for free SIM cards.

The authority warned that fraudsters could misuse biometric data to obtain additional SIM cards in another person’s name.
