PharmaCon 2026 brought together leading healthcare professionals, researchers, academicians and industry experts at Ziauddin University to promote innovation in pharmacology and strengthen scientific collaboration.

Organised by the Department of Pharmacology at Ziauddin Medical College, the conference carried the theme “Transforming Knowledge into Therapeutics.” The event focused on converting laboratory research into safe, effective and accessible treatments for patients.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr Muhammad Ali Shaikh urged Pakistan to develop indigenous medical research and reduce reliance on imported knowledge and medicines. He said conferences like PharmaCon help scientists, clinicians and industry experts develop local healthcare solutions while inspiring young researchers.

Meanwhile, Additional Collector of Pakistan Customs Dr Ali Raza Turabi warned about the growing threat of drug abuse among young people. He said criminal networks now combine technology with international trafficking, making drug abuse a challenge for public health, education, law enforcement and national security.

He added that every successful anti-drug effort strengthens Pakistan’s health and security.

In addition, Syed Amir Sajjad, CEO of Dr Sajjad’s Australian Concept Infertility, IVF and Genetics Centre, stressed the importance of translating scientific research into practical healthcare benefits. He said research creates real value when it improves diagnosis, treatment and national healthcare policies.

Speaking at the conference, Aga Khan University Vice Provost for Research Prof. Dr Salim S. Virani encouraged participants to remain resilient, embrace continuous learning and turn challenges into opportunities for growth.

Furthermore, Prof. Dr Sadaf Mumtaz highlighted the importance of integrating basic science, clinical research and computational drug discovery to develop advanced therapeutics.

Earlier, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences Prof. Dr Abbas Zafar said pharmacology forms the foundation of modern medicine and plays a vital role in improving medical education and patient care.

Chief Organiser Prof. Dr M. Owais Ismail said the conference provided a platform for researchers and clinicians to exchange knowledge and strengthen scientific collaboration.

The event featured six oral presentations and 32 poster presentations. It concluded with a renewed commitment to advancing pharmacology research, therapeutic innovation and evidence-based healthcare in Pakistan.
