Pakistan Armenia Ties Gain Momentum as Shafqat Ali Khan Presents Credentials

Ambassador Shafqat Ali Khan, Pakistan’s first ambassador to the Republic of Armenia, presented his Letters of Credence to Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan at a ceremony held at the Presidential Palace in Yerevan.

The presentation marked a significant step in Pakistan Armenia relations following the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries in 2025.

President Khachaturyan welcomed Ambassador Khan and congratulated him on his appointment. He also expressed his best wishes for a successful tenure and said Armenia was ready to support efforts aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

Ambassador Khan conveyed the greetings and best wishes of President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to President Khachaturyan. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to developing closer relations with Armenia and exploring new opportunities for cooperation.

During the meeting, both sides highlighted the potential for greater engagement in trade and investment, education, culture, people-to-people contacts and other areas of economic cooperation.

Ambassador Khan’s appointment represents a new milestone in diplomatic engagement between Islamabad and Yerevan. It is also Pakistan’s first ambassadorial-level appointment to Armenia since the two countries established diplomatic relations.

Before presenting his credentials to the Armenian president, Ambassador Khan met Armenia’s Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan. The minister congratulated him on his appointment and wished him success in carrying out his diplomatic responsibilities.

The two officials reviewed the bilateral agenda and discussed possible avenues for expanding cooperation. They also exchanged views on regional and international developments of mutual interest.

Ambassador Khan separately met Armenian Deputy Foreign Minister Mnatsakan Safaryan and handed over a copy of his Letters of Credence. Safaryan described the establishment of diplomatic relations between Pakistan and Armenia as an important policy decision by the leadership of both countries.

The officials discussed prospects for closer cooperation through bilateral and multilateral forums, while also exploring areas where the two countries could deepen their engagement.

The series of meetings in Yerevan underscored the intention of both governments to build on the diplomatic relationship established last year. Trade, investment, education, culture and people-to-people connections are expected to remain important areas as the relationship develops.

Ambassador Khan currently serves concurrently as Pakistan’s ambassador to the United Arab Emirates and as the country’s non-resident ambassador to Armenia.

His diplomatic engagements in Yerevan provide an early indication of Pakistan’s efforts to establish a broader institutional relationship with Armenia and identify practical areas of cooperation between the two countries.
