The Legal Aid and Justice Authority (LAJA), a statutory body, and the Legal Aid Society (LAS), a non-profit organization headquartered in Karachi with offices in Sindh and the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT), have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the Ministry of Law and Justice (MoLJ) to advance access to justice across Pakistan.
The ceremony was graced by Barrister Aqeel Malik, Minister of State for Law and Justice, whose leadership has been instrumental in strengthening legal aid systems, supporting marginalized communities, empowering bar associations, and promoting innovation through legal technology and AI-driven solutions.
Under this collaboration, LAJA and LAS reaffirm their shared commitment to strengthening the rule of law and expanding access to justice, particularly in underserved regions such as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, and ICT, where structural and socio-economic barriers persist.
The MoU provides a framework for cooperation through information sharing, joint programming, capacity building, and coordinated advocacy. Key areas of collaboration include the delivery of pro bono and subsidized legal aid services, deployment of community paralegals, development of multilingual legal awareness resources, and expansion of technology-enabled legal assistance such as remote services and helplines.
The partnership will also focus on institutional strengthening through training programs for justice sector stakeholders, joint research on access to justice, and the development of knowledge products and best practices to be shared at national and international forums.
Both organizations have committed to maintaining high professional standards, sharing knowledge, and ensuring effective coordination through designated focal points to achieve sustainable legal empowerment outcomes.
