KCFR Hosts Seminar on Pakistan’s Blue Economy: Urgent Action to Unlock Maritime Potential

Karachi: The Karachi Council on Foreign Relations (KCFR) organized a high-profile seminar on The Prospects of the Blue Economy in Pakistan at the Quaid-e-Azam House Museum on Thursday. The event convened policymakers, diplomats, business leaders, academics, and maritime experts to deliberate on the country’s vast but largely untapped maritime resources.

In her welcome address, KCFR Chairperson Nadira Panjwani emphasized the urgency of developing Pakistan’s Blue Economy, highlighting its potential to become a key driver of sustainable growth.

Delivering the keynote address, Admiral (R) Ahmed Saeed, HI(M) underscored the strategic importance of Pakistan’s coastline and Exclusive Economic Zone, stressing the need for comprehensive planning to maximize national gains.

The Chinese Consul General noted that through the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), China aims to strengthen policy dialogue, promote investment, and raise awareness to harness Pakistan’s maritime potential. He said such initiatives could make the Blue Economy a cornerstone of economic growth, sustainability, and bilateral cooperation.

Special Assistant to the Chief Minister (SACM) Qasim N. Qamar highlighted the economic significance of Sindh and Balochistan’s coastal belt. He stressed that effective utilization of these maritime assets could enhance trade, fisheries, and tourism while creating new employment opportunities. He also called for integrated policies and strategic investments to transform the sector into a growth engine.

Other distinguished speakers included Ms. Aliya Shahid, Director General Ports and Shipping, Mr. Khizar Pervaiz, CEO Sindh Investment Department, and Mr. M.H. Lodhi, MD Monsoon Winds, who shared insights on the role of investment, regulation, and private sector participation in developing Pakistan’s maritime economy.

The seminar concluded with a strong consensus that Pakistan’s Blue Economy, if strategically developed, holds the potential to boost national revenue, strengthen global trade linkages, and drive sustainable economic progress.
