Karachi: Commissioner of Karachi Division, Syed Hassan Naqvi, along with Mr. Irfan Salam Mirwani, Deputy Commissioner of District Malir, and Mr. Khizar Pervaiz, Chief Executive Officer of the Sindh Enterprise Development Fund (SEDF), visited the project site of Bio-waste Energy Ventures Pvt. Limited (BEVPL) at the Nagori Cooperative Dairy Farming Society in Gadap, District Malir. This visit marked the commencement of construction for the second digester of the biogas plant.

Sindh Enterprise Development Fund Supports Economic Growth

The Government of Sindh (GoS) established the Sindh Enterprise Development Fund (SEDF) to promote investment in small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). The fund aims to stimulate economic growth, create jobs, and reduce poverty. SEDF provides technical and financial support, including mark-up subsidies, to encourage value addition in various sectors, such as agricultural value chains, clean energy, and technology. This initiative aims to enhance efficiency and profitability while promoting best business practices.

Biogas Plant to Generate Bio-Methane for Karachi Industries

The BEVPL project, approved and supported by SEDF, will feature a commercial-scale biogas plant with a capacity of 20,000 cubic meters, generating approximately 11,000 cubic meters of bio-methane daily. This bio-methane will be compressed to 200 bar and supplied to industries in Karachi. The total project cost is around PKR 800 million, with PKR 380 million financed by Bank Alfalah Limited. Partial debt guarantees are provided by USAID, and SEDF offers debt subsidized up to KIBOR. The biogas plant will primarily utilize animal dung, with co-digestion of various organic feedstocks as needed. Additionally, the facility can process a range of biodegradable waste, including agricultural and municipal waste.

Commissioner Praises Green Energy Initiative

Commissioner Naqvi praised the SEDF’s efforts, stating that the project is a significant milestone for the clean energy sector in Sindh, inspiring others to harness the province’s green energy potential.

Deputy Commissioner Irfan Salam Mirwani acknowledged the project sponsors, particularly Mr. Waqas Mohsin, Director of BEVPL, and Mr. Khizar Pervaiz, CEO of SEDF, for their commitment to implementing the project efficiently.

Contribution to Socio-Economic Development

The CEO of SEDF emphasized that the project represents a vital step towards reducing the carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emissions from industries in Sindh. This initiative will contribute to the socio-economic development of the province and Pakistan as a whole.
