Islamabad MoU: Shehbaz Sharif and Asim Munir meet JD Vance ahead of US-Iran talks

Senior Pakistani and US officials hold discussions in Switzerland as technical negotiations begin under the Islamabad agreement.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir met US Vice President JD Vance in Zurich on Sunday as diplomatic efforts continued under the Islamabad MoU.

US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and former presidential adviser Jared Kushner also attended the meeting.

The talks took place ahead of technical negotiations between the United States and Iran, which are due to begin in Bürgenstock, Switzerland. Officials from the United States, Iran, Pakistan and Qatar will participate in the discussions.

The meeting aims to advance commitments outlined in the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding. The agreement was signed by Washington and Tehran on 17 June 2026.

Pakistan has pledged to support the implementation of the understandings reached between Iran and the United States. Officials say the latest talks will focus on practical steps needed to move the process forward.

The Islamabad MoU contains a 14-point framework designed to reduce tensions and promote long-term stability. US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signed the agreement, while Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif signed it as a mediator.

Under the agreement, Tehran and Washington committed to a framework aimed at ending hostilities. The deal also includes the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and a 60-day timeline for further negotiations.

International leaders have broadly welcomed the agreement, which seeks to end more than 100 days of conflict.

The document also outlines future discussions on Iran’s nuclear programme. Once both sides reach a final agreement, the United States is expected to facilitate access to a $300 billion reconstruction fund backed by regional countries.
