Ishaq Dar congratulates new UN Security Council non-permanent members

Pakistan reaffirms commitment to peace and multilateral cooperation as five countries elected to UNSC for 2027–2028 term.

ISLAMABAD: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Thursday congratulated Austria, Kyrgyzstan, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago, and Zimbabwe on their election as non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2027–2028 term.

In a message posted on X, Ishaq Dar extended his best wishes to the newly elected members and expressed hope that they would effectively fulfil their responsibilities in maintaining global peace and security.

He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the objectives of the UN Security Council, stating that Pakistan, which will continue its tenure on the Council until 2026, remains dedicated to promoting peace, dialogue, security, and multilateral cooperation.

Dar also expressed Pakistan’s willingness to work closely with the incoming members to advance shared international goals and contribute to a more stable, secure, and equitable global order.

The United Nations General Assembly elected the five countries on Wednesday as non-permanent members of the 15-member Security Council. Their two-year terms will begin on January 1, 2027.

The UNSC is responsible for maintaining international peace and security and has the authority to impose sanctions and authorize the use of force. It consists of five permanent members with veto power — China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States — and ten non-permanent members elected on a rotating basis.

Under the established regional allocation system, seats are distributed among Africa, Asia-Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Western European and Others Group.

Pakistan itself was elected as a non-permanent member of the Security Council in June 2024, securing 182 votes in the 193-member General Assembly, well above the required majority.
