Google Fine Trump orders US probe after EU imposes $1bn penalty

Google Fine has intensified tensions between the United States and the European Union after President Donald Trump ordered a Section 301 investigation. The move follows the EU’s $1 billion penalty against Alphabet-owned Google.

The European Commission fined Google €890 million ($1 billion) on Thursday. It said the company violated EU rules designed to limit the market power of major technology firms.

Meanwhile, Trump criticised the decision in a social media post. He said the United States would “immediately initiate a 301 Investigation into the practice of ‘ROBBING’ American Companies.” He referred to Section 301 of the U.S. Trade Act of 1974.

Furthermore, Trump warned that the European Union would face serious consequences. He described the bloc’s action as “illegal and highly unethical.”

However, the European Commission said the penalties were necessary to protect fair competition in the digital marketplace. Regulators argued that the rules ensure equal opportunities for rivals.

The latest dispute adds to growing trade tensions between Washington and Brussels. As a result, technology regulation is likely to remain a key issue in relations between the two sides.
